Description

A specialist demolition and groundworks project at Herrington PRS in Sunderland carried out on behalf of Aughton Automation within a live Northern Gas Networks facility. The works formed part of a wider site upgrade and included demolition of existing structures, deep excavation, reinforced concrete construction, ducting installations, draw pits, flagging, and associated reinstatement works.

The project involved the demolition of the existing E&I building, partial demolition of the old governor building, removal and reconstruction of valve chamber structures, and construction of a new kiosk base complete with associated service ducting and access infrastructure. Additional works included confined space operations, temporary works for deep excavations, brickwork, and full site clearance and reinstatement.

Due to the high-risk nature of the environment, all excavation works were undertaken under strict permit controls with continuous CAT & Genny scanning, hand digging around known services, and adherence to Northern Gas Networks safe digging procedures. Temporary works and excavation support systems were implemented where required to maintain safe access and ground stability throughout the works.

All operatives on site held the relevant utility sector competencies, including EUSR SHEA Gas qualifications, with trained CPCS operators, banksmen, and competent persons overseeing all lifting, excavation, and demolition activities. The project was delivered with a strong focus on safety, coordination, and compliance within a live gas infrastructure environment while maintaining programme and quality requirements throughout.
